As we visit the same parks throughout the year, we've realized how obvious some seasonal changes in parks can be, especially when water is involved. We had some neat experiences that I talked about at ouradventuringfamily.com.

The perfectionist inside me still wants to do all the things, especially when I have lofty goals to achieve and a timeline that I want to achieve those goals in. But years of illness have forcefully hit home the message that I can't do it all. I haven't come up with a magical solution, but I think part of it lies in those lessons I learned when I was ill. I knew they were going to be shaped like a relay baton, but I thought it would be a miniature version.
.
Nope! I now have a full-size baton hanging on my wall with my other medals 🤣

We renamed her because Oreo just didn’t fit her personality. Her full name is Mad Max, Scourge of All Multi-legged Critters 🤣.
.
Anyway. She does not understand the concept of, nor the need for, a post-run selfie, even if the sky does look super cool. We’re working on that.

I've run several virtual races since everything shutdown, but it's been more than a month since the last one. I've got a couple more weeks till this next one, but I'm looking forward to it.⠀
⠀
The Great National Park Relay is a 24 hour virtual relay race. Each team is named for a national park or monument and is made up of 24 runners or walkers. Each member runs or walks as far as they can in one hour before "passing" the baton to the next member of the team. ⠀
⠀
Many of the original teams are full, but they've added a number of new teams, so if you want to participate, you can still sign up! #teamshenandoahalltheway⠀

This little guy has been taking banjo lessons for the last two years and has learned so much. His teacher wasn't able to hold her usual session for the students to share the songs they'd been working on, so she came up with another idea. Each student recorded their favorite song and sent it to her so she could share it with the other students.⠀
⠀
I just had to share this picture of my son looking so dapper when we recorded his song 😍 ⠀

We've talked about getting a dog for years, but the timing was never right. However, this summer we felt like it was finally the time. About a month ago we started checking the local shelters for likely candidates and after a couple weeks we found this little girl.⠀
⠀
Oreo is about 6 months old and such a sweetie! We've taken her on a couple hikes, which she enjoyed. Right now it's too hot for me to run outside, but as soon as it cools down I'll start taking her for trail runs.⠀

The obligatory medal pic 📷. This race was the lon The obligatory medal pic 📷.

This race was the longest, furthest I’ve ever run, and definitively a challenge.

It was good to push myself and see that I can still <sometimes> do things that I’ve spent the last two years thinking I no longer could.

Chronic illness causes a lot of uncertainty and frustration in my life. Completing a challenging goal like this restores a bit of the normalcy that’s no longer a part of my life.

Full disclosure: I’ve found that moderate exercise helps me manage my symptoms. This was not moderate exercise and it did take awhile to recover 😉.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to do this as a virtual race- it would have been too physically stressful to run a regular trail race with all the aspects I wouldn’t have control over.
