I have a pair of hiking pants that I really like, so I had to share them here.

I first talked about my REI Screeline Hybrid pants in this post, where I I mentioned that despite falling and gouging my left knee quite badly on a jagged piece of blacktop, there were no rips, tears, or thinning to my pants. My knee still has some pretty funky scars, but my pants are just fine.

What I like and don’t like about my REI Screeline Hybrid Pants

Like

The snaps to fold up the pant legs to capri length. Perfect with a pair of Chaco or Keen sandals.

Petite sizes! They’re only a smidge long on me, which is a miracle. It’s very hard to find pants I don’t have to hem up. They also come in regular and tall lengths,

The fabric is slightly stretchy at the thighs/hips/waist with thicker fabric from just above the knees to the hem. It’s light enough for summer wear, but thick enough to protect legs from underbrush.

They’re durable. I’ve been wearing them at least 3-4 days a week (they’re that comfy!) since I bought them last May, and they don’t show much wear at all. Some pilling on the inside of the pants along the inseam of the thighs is all that I’ve noticed.

They’re versatile. The fabric is lightweight for warmer temps, but I’ve also found them easy to wear over a base layer or two for warmth in the winter.

They have a nice wide waistband, deep pockets in the front, as well as back pockets.

Meh

The loopy waist tightener thing. The excess length flops around inside the waistband and is difficult to loosen once it tightens. I like to wear a belt, so I don’t use it, but I can see how it would be useful. A friend had the tightener break at an inopportune moment, so I wouldn’t necessarily trust it to keep my pants up.

Don’t like

Ummm. There’s not a lot not to like. However…

The price. The regular price is $80, which is a bit steep in my book, though given their durability, they are worth the money. I purchased them for $39 on sale last May, which was a much easier price to swallow. And you can bet I’ll be keeping an eye out this spring for another sale so I can buy another pair!

Limited colors. Petite and tall sizes only come in black, though regular length sizes come in two others, chocolate plum and sage gray. I’m thinking about getting a pair of regular length pants in the sage gray and just wearing them folded up to capri length.

The reinforced pant leg section also tends to attract fuzz in the dryer if washed with other fabrics.

Men aren’t left out either

Now, my husband hasn’t tried the men’s version yet (he prefers his 5.11s), but REI does carry Screeline pants for men. The men’s version can be found in 30″ and 32″ inseam lengths and don’t have the snaps to convert into capri pants. Both lengths are available in burlap, a dark tan color.

A word of warning

Don’t confuse the Screeline Hybrid or Screeline pants with the Screeline Technical pants. The majority of the reviews for the Screeline Technical pants are not complimentary- inconsistent sizing seems to be a huge issue.

The takeaway

I love them! I wear them all the time and they still look great. They’re nice enough to wear on adventures and not feel like a slob, or wear on adventures. My pants have been on road trips, countless hikes, to the beach a few times, snowshoeing several times, as well as just worn around the house or into town for errands. They really are that versatile.
