A number of years ago we lived in Monterey, California. If you’ve ever been to Monterey, you know it’s a beautiful area with lots to see and do.

We lived there about a year and a half and we kept adding to our list of “things we should do”, but we didn’t actually do any of those things.

Then came the day when we realized we were moving really soon and still hadn’t done anything on our list.

We spent a weekend trying to cram in as many activities as we could. We went to San Francisco and explored Fisherman’s Wharf and the Ghirardelli factory, took pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge, kayaked in Monterey Bay, and so on.

It was a frantically busy weekend, and we got to do a lot of things, but we missed a lot as well. We didn’t have time to take our time and enjoy what we were doing, and we were exhausted at the end of it all.

After that experience we told ourselves we wouldn’t procrastinate like that again. But life takes over, schedules become crowded, children are born and it’s no longer easy to just take off and do things.

We’ve found ourselves slipping back into the habit of not actually doing the things on our to-do list. We live in an area rich with Civil War history, but until this past year we hadn’t visited any of the sites. We’d lived here almost six years and the time to procrastinate was past. Plus the boys are getting older and easier to take along on outings.

So we finally made it a priority to start visiting Civil War sites, starting with National Park sites. We haven’t visited them all, but we’ve started!
