Whether you’re experiencing a wet spring, a wet fall, or even just a summer downpour, a rainy day in your RV can put a crimp in your plans. It can be a welcome respite from a busy schedule and you may find the patter of rain on the ceiling soothing.

But if the storm hangs around and is too cold for playing in, it can be too easy for everyone to get stir crazy. Even if you were intrepid and spent some time hiking or playing outside in the rain, you’ll still want to dry off and get warm.

Make the most of a rainy day in your RV and plan to have a cozy fun time by yourself or with your family. Read all about it at ouradventuringfamily.com.

If you’re staying home right now and social distancing, you can still use these tips to change things up on a rainy day at home. If your RV or trailer is in your driveway, head out there for a change of pace on a rainy day. You can also adapt these tips and use them at home, even if your RV isn’t around.

How to have a cozy, rainy day in your RV

1. Get cozy

If you have an electric fireplace in your rig and the hookups or generator to run it, turn that thing on! Or use a small electric space heater to warm things up. RVs have furnaces that will warm things up, but I find the constant blowing noise annoying. The quiet hum of the space heater is much more to my liking. Don’t forget to pull out your warm, snuggly layers. This could be blankets, sleeping bags, hoodies, whatever you have.

2. Have story time

A rainy day, cozy layers, a good book, they go together like peanut butter and jelly. Depending on the ages in your family, reading books or magazines individually might be enough to keep everyone happy. But little ones might need some one to read aloud to them. Or audiobooks might be more your speed. Do what works for you. (you can find our favorite audiobooks here)

3. Keep hands busy

I don’t know about your kiddos (or even yourself), but sitting still, just listening to a story doesn’t last very long in our family. But give us something to do with our hands, and we can sit and listen a lot longer.

For us, this means coloring books and jigsaw puzzles, LEGO, (DUPLO for the littles), and paint by sticker books.

4. Game time

If listening to a story isn’t up your alley, play a board game or a card game. There’s so many good ones! Monopoly, Clue, Sleeping Queens, Uno, Munchkin, whatever your favorite games are.

5. Movie time

Read a book, play a game, then snuggle up in front of a movie. Or two. Or three. We won’t judge.😉

6. Don’t forget the snacks

Pop some jiffy pop on the stove, make some hot chocolate or hot cider … Pass the snacks around as you read, play games, or watch movies.
